The Grok name now sits on several products. Treating them as one assistant is how people download the wrong app, buy the wrong plan, or paste a PR prompt into a Bot that was hired to watch expenses.

Three surfaces

Grok chat (grok.com) is a conversational product: questions, images, voice, and other chat-native tools depending on plan. Use it when you want an answer in the thread.

Cursor is an editor. You are in the files. Cursor also has long-running cloud coding agents that open branches and propose pull requests from that world. Use it when the artifact is a diff you will merge.

Grok Bot is a dedicated desktop and iPhone app for named teammates on a persistent cloud computer. They sign into tools, keep working after you close the laptop, and come back for approval. Use it when the artifact lives in another app — CRM, staging, inbox, dashboard — or needs to run while you are away.

How Grok Bot is not “Cursor with a chat skin”

Grok Bot signs in with a Cursor account and is included on paid Cursor plans after 26 August 2026. That does not make it the editor. A Bot’s workspace is /workspace on Agent Computer, not your local repo unless you explicitly enable and approve local-computer access. Engineering work on Grok Bot is a different guide.

How Grok Bot is not ChatGPT Operator / OpenClaw either

Those products also aim at computer use. The useful comparison is still the job: Does this surface give you named, durable Bots, a shared account-scoped VM, routines you can teach, and an approval stop? Check the live product, not a category essay. For ChatGPT specifically, see Grok Bot vs ChatGPT.

A practical chooser

You need…Start with
An explanation, a draft paragraph, a pictureGrok chat
A code change you will review in an editorCursor
Overnight research that stops at a review listGrok Bot + a playbook
A bug reproduced in staging with screenshotsGrok Bot Bug Reproduction, then Cursor if a patch follows
Recurring finance or inbox prep with a send gateGrok Bot routine, not a chat reminder

If you cannot name the artifact and the stop sign, you are not ready to automate — whichever logo you prefer.
